This book has been eight years in the making. I began the English People of 21st Century project back in 2018. I focused on the Tribes aspect first. The Modern Tribes are about the English and how they form groups for a variety of purposes. They may be Ethnic Tribes, Political Tribes, Religious Tribes, Recreational Tribes or Subcultural Tribes. Sociologists have begun suggesting that membership of groups have beneficial effects in terms of wellbeing and health. Networking provides a sense of belonging and getting out and about can improve fitness.
Morris is an interesting social phenomenon. Morris dancers have been in existence in England for about 1000 years in one form or another. Today they can be seen in many towns and villages during the year. They have their own philosophy, culture, attire and social organisation.
David Gilbert Wright has immersed himself in this tribe in order to really find out more about them. His Black & White photographs of this tribe have a distinctly unique quality having been shot on film.
This is the third book by David Gilbert Wright in the f8 Documentary Monograph series. You will like this small book if you are interested in visual anthropology and black & white photography of the past.
