I regard travellers collectively as an ethnic tribe. There are two distinct groups of travellers found in England. Both are nomadic but can also be seen in appointed static sites. They will often travel long distances to gatherings such as horse fairs in order to renew acquaintances, trade horses, hold religious events such as First Holy Communions and Confirmations. Each have their own customs, traditions and languages. There are those who can claim their origins from the Irish Travellers. They speak English and De Gammon (Shelta), a mixed language with Irish and English origins. The other group have Indo-Aryan roots and are called Romani Gypsies. They speak the Romani language with Indic roots. Their nomadic lifestyles have led to them experiencing considerable discrimination despite being protected as Ethnic groups by the Equality Act (2010).

During my time documenting this unique ‘tribe’ I have noted distinct characteristics that are common in the men, the women, the boys and the girls. Some elements of these can be seen in my photographs. Each of these groups wear particular styles of clothing, wear their hair in certain ways and exhibit behaviours specific to their tribe. They are very family orientated and have strong values. Horses are important as a means of showing status and as a form of currency. Many have excellent horsemanship and treat their horses extremely well. They make a magnificent sight riding bareback and their skill in manoeuvring two-wheeled sulkies at great speed is something to marvel.
